For those of you who do not know what RIDERS.AID is get out in the world and discover this wonderful organization. And for those of you who have not been out of the loop, you are most likely eagerly awaiting the 6th annual RIDERS.AID Season opener in Lake Louise. This year is promising to be bigger and better than ever. Each year, Ryan Belder, and a team host the annual season opener at Stables Pub in Lake Louise. Thanks to the generosity of many big wigs in the snowboard industry this event is able to happen, and raise more than $3000 each year for Sumaritans Purse Turn on the Tap project. But this year we hope to raise even more. Which means we need you to come out, to buy some raffle tickets or to just donate some of your hard earned cash to provide clean drinking water in Africa.

The night usually consists of some of this years new snowboard films, some serious raffling, a raging dance floor (last year being the most outrageous by far), accompanied by some local DJ’s. Different shenanigans sometimes involving but not limited to…. snowboard spankings, slap fights, product tosses and other random stuff. And of course all around great times. So if you are in the area, and are wanting to support a great cause, and maybe get some early season snowboarding or skiing in, head on out to Lake Louise on November 15th. Spend the day riding at Lake louise, then that evening head on up to Stables Pub 111 Lake Louis Dr. Lake Louise, AB for a great night, and who knows, maybe you will be the lucky winner of some great prizes.

In 2008 Nations Foundation was formed in Seattle, WA. Nations Foundation is a Non-Profit organization with the goal to share the gospel, and the saving grace message, to the global snowboard community (that is over 20million people world wide), using snowboard films that highlight some of the best athletes (Kelly Clark, Andy Finch, Dave Downing), as they share their lives and faith.

The first full length feature, ONE YEAR, since its release in 2008 has been shown to over 130 000 people each year.

In the Fall of 2012, Nations is coming out with a new movie called ANTHROPOLOGY. This second full length feature is going to consists of snowboarders such as, Arbor rider; Nick Visconti, Clothing designer (Nomis) Simon Chamberlain, Amazing Race competitor, and X-Game champion; Andy Finch and Tommy Czechin, Snowboard legend; Dave Downing, up and coming sensation; Ryan Paul, and so many others!

Nations Foundation is focusing their efforts in Canada this year with hopes to see this movie taken across our incredible nation! This film is not only an excellent work of cinematography following the lives of snowboarders passionate about their sport, but it is a medium to share the Gospel among those who not only call snowboarding a sport, but a way of life.

Nicole Arkle, a long time member of SFC, has recently taken on the role of Canadian Outreach Director for Nations foundation. Her hope is to see ANTHROPOLOGY brought to every major Snowboarding community in Canada! (And Alaska… and any northern American ski communities) Bringing with it the hope of the Gospel that transforms lives for the glory of God. Nicole is need of people willing to partner with her and Nations foundation to bring it to their area by hosting video premiers. ANTHROPOLOGY will be released in December this year! SFC Calgary is already in discussion on being the first Canadian premier site for early December!

So if you are interested in and willing to host a premiere of ANTHROPOLOGY in your community with Nicole and Nations Foundation.

Please feel free to contact Nicole with any questions

In our last Mountain Journal, we asked that you would prayerfully consider supporting the ministry of Snowboarders and Skiers for Christ financially. For those who did contribute we thank you from the bottoms of our hearts for being an integral part of this ministry. Without your love and support we would not be able to continue our ministry. And for those of you who did not give or are still considering a challenge has arose. Over the last month a private Donor has graciously offered to match all donations over the next 60 days to the sum of 5000 dollars. So that means if we receive 5000 dollars they will match with another 5000 dollars bringing the grand total of all money given to 10,000. We have currently raised a third of our annual budget, and this will greatly help us reach that goal and reach the mountains with the gospel. But we only have 60 Days to take hold of this opportunity. This is a great opportunity to begin moving forward as well as a great challenge for those of you who have been thinking of giving. In essence this will double the money that you will actually give. So lets step it up. Lets see if we can reach 5000 dollars in 60 days. That’s 83 dollars a day, or 24 Starbucks drinks. So if there are 24 people who are willing to give up their Starbucks a day, we can totally hit this goal. In next months mountain journal we will update everyone with the totals for the half way mark.

This past weekend four hundred and forty three riders from Fernie to Edmonton (and beyond) made the pilgrimage to Panorama Mountain Village this weekend for the 25thAnniversary Easy Rider Snowboard Cup. Located just outside of Invermere, B.C., Panorama has a strong community of local riders and some of the best staff in the biz, making it the choice venue for this weekend-long event. The event included a two day battle of the clock on a banked slalom course, as well as a big air competition. With well over 400 competitors this is the biggest snowboard contest in Canada if not North America. And Riders.Aid got to be front and center.

It was awesome to see such a great turnout from SFC chapters for this event, ready to participate as well as help out where needed. Whether on the course, or in the riders aid tent. At the tent, we sold raffle tickets to raise money for the Turn On The Tap Program. Not only did we raise over $2000 dollars for the Turn On The Tap program, but we brought awareness to a massive problem in our world, and made it known not only to the general public but to a large group of the snowboard industry.

Thank you to everyone for all there time and energy to pull of such an incredible event. For more info about what went down check out http://www.snowboardcanada.com/news_article?news_id=2057

Only a couple weeks away is the 25th Annual Easy Rider Cup and Riders Aid Fundraiser in Panorama. We will have a Riders Aid tent at the event to raise awareness and funds for the Turn on the Tap program. We will be selling raffle tickets, with all proceeds going to clean drinking water in Africa. Not only are we hoping for a large turnout to this event, we are going to have an SFC Season Ender as well. What’s better than shredding with friends, winning sweet prizes, helping with the contest, raising money for clean drinking water and sharing how the Lord has been working in and through us this season.

The Easy Rider Cup is on March 31st/April1st. Lake Windermere Alliance Church has graciously allowed us to crash on its floors once again. We will be there from the Friday night to the Sunday. SO whenever you can make it that would be awesome. Drop Tyler an email if you are able to make it for the weekend. tcassidy3@gmail.com

This year on March 31st and April 1st Panorama Mountain Village will be hosting the 25th annual Easy Rider Cup. This Years event is set to be bigger and better than the previous 24, and Rider’s Aid is looking to do the same. We will have a tent at the event to provide both awareness and funds for Samaritans Purse; Turn on the Tap program. This year we will have a tent set up in the village and will be selling raffle tickets, with all proceeds going to the Turn on the Tap program. There will be some sweet raffle prizes from Burton, Volcom and Nixon. The second part of the fundraiser happens at the after party in the T-bar on Saturday night. The cover charge for the bar that night will go to Rider’s Aid, plus we will continue to sell raffle tickets in the bar for the charity raffle. So come on out for a great weekend of races, prizes, and serving our brothers and sisters around the globe by providing them with clean drinking water.

On Friday march 9th myself (Tyler) and Mark loaded up the car with our gear and headed to Blairmore from Fernie to a tiny locally run ski hill called Powder Keg http://www.passpowderkeg.com. We were going to spend the evening riding with a youth group as well as sharing our faith stories and the mission of SFC. As we drove up we had no idea what to expect. Getting there we noticed that this place was small, just two T-bars. But that didn’t stop us, we were stoked to ride at night, and we had heard rumors of a park. So we strapped in and took the t-bar up to the top to meet the youth. This night about ten of the regular 25 youth had donned their hoodies. For it was a warm spring evening to come ski, snowboard and snowblade (that’s right some people still ride these death traps).

So Mark and I spent the next 2 hours lapping the dimly lit runs and park with the local youth. It was awesome to just watch these kids shred as well as spending some time getting to know them. After a few hours of rail after rail and park jump after park jump we went to the local youth leaders house for pizza and sharing. These youth have been discussing what it looks like to live out your faith in all aspects of life as well as pursuing your passions and faith in harmony. So Mark and I shared with 15 youth what SFC is and does, as well as shared a bit of stories with these youth. It was a fantastic opportunity to spread SFC, yet more so than this, it is a fantastic way to share Jesus with a bunch of youth that are wanting to know him more.

Over New Years we held our annual Worship and Ride event. Which brings sfc chapters together to… worship and ride. Here are some stories from that weekend.

This weekend, we saw Gods faithfulness in two encounters on the mountain that truly sought to bring him glory. On the 31st as a crew from Edmonton gathered up to hit the slopes, they met Jakob. Lillian says, “We met Jakob riding by himself because all of his friends had ditched him early on. As we rode together Jakob asked why we constantly waited for one another, and why we were just genuinely stoked for one another. As we continued to ride I got to share a bit about SFC and he shared about Christians in his life, and the genuine love they exuded. The next morning we saw Jakob again, and he explained how he went out new years and described all the partying, alcohol and drugs, and how he wished he had just come and hung out with our crew. Living out our Joy on the mountain is so crazy because it speaks so much more than any ministry we can do on the hill.”

On New Years day Lillian met Melanie. As Lillian rushed to the washroom she said a quick hi to this stranger. But in a rush the conversation didn’t last long, and the crew was headed up to pray at the top of the White Pass chair. A Worship and Ride tradition. Just as they were about to pray, Melanie asked if she could join them for some runs. But before they left Lillian invited her to pray with them. Melanie agreed, saying, “we do dances to Gods on the mountain all the time”, but this was different. After the prayer time she spoke of the pureness and the presence she felt within this group of riders. Lillian says, “She really wanted to stick with the group, she was completely drawn in by who we were. Melanie rode with us the rest of the day, just having fun. SFC really knows how to love, and really knows what family and community is. And the beauty is anyone can step into that no matter what, we just Love! Just that small conversation in the bathroom transformed her level of joy.”

“Just being aware of God encounters, like going to the bathroom, can be totally set up by God and we just need to recognize it. So we can see encounters with his eyes because it changes everything. In SFC we are learning to live with the eyes of the Father on the hill, not eyes for their own.”

By the kingdoms standard worship and ride was a complete success, fun was had, snow was shredded, and people began to experience the fullness and joy that only Jesus can bring.

Lights, camera, smoke, ACTION! The NIKE Chosen event exploded Friday night at Mountain High in a sea of sound, strobes, and solid snowboarding. The course consisted of a signature rainbow box painted by madsteez.com, a stair set, a concrete ledge, and three quarterpipes connected by two corrugated tubes. It was Mountain High’s own Ryan Paul who took first and best trick with his backside 360 50/50 on the stair set. Ian Sams took second place with his proper tricks on every feature while Yeager Bailey managed third with his style and flip tricks. Melissa Evans from Big Bear won the Women’s division with her relentless domination of the stair set and quarterpipe.

Hey Everybody!

Our annual conference is only two weeks away! I hope that many of you are making plans to be in Invermere for that weekend. The festivities will kick off with dinner at 6pm on Friday Oct 14th. All of our meetings and “el cheapo” sleeping arrangements will be at Lake Windermere Alliance Church. If you want to sleep in a comfy hotel bed then that is totally up to you. We recommend booking a room at the Mountain View Lodge if that is the route you want to go.
We are aiming to line up billets for young families to stay with, so if you fall in that category please let me know asap if you are coming and we will try to find a nice local family for you to stay with. Besides we don’t want your screaming kids keeping everybody awake at the church….yes, I can say that….it happens.

So here’s the basic details:

Cost: $40/person

Start time: 6pm on Friday Oct 14th

End time: After church on Oct 16th

Meeting/Sleeping place:

Lake Windermere Alliance Church
326 – 10th Avenue
Box 280
Invermere, BC V0A 1K0

To Bring: Sleeping bag, sleeping mattress, swimsuit, hiking shoes, warm clothes (for possible hiking activity)

Please email/text/FB me back and let me know as soon as you can if you are able to make it and how many are coming with you. WE WANT THERE TO BE FOOD FOR EVERYONE. That’s really important to Kirk okay. He’s Greek, it’s an offense to go hungry.

The SFC Board of Directors and myself have been chewing on a big decision for the last couple years and it is now becoming a reality. We have decided that it is time to start looking for a new National Director for SFC Canada. This has been part of our discussions and prayers for quite some time and we feel this is the direction that God has for us.

I have been in this role for the past 12 years and it is time for someone with new passion, energy and vision to take over the position. Someone who will bring fresh life to SFC, who has a new skill set, who has more freedom to travel and can spend more time with the core leaders in their resort towns.

We feel that this will be a really positive thing for SFC and that it will build on the foundations that have been laid.

We have come up with a job posting that outlines what kind of person we are looking for and the timeline we are looking at. We are planning to have the successful applicant in place by Dec 1st, 2011 so that they can work alongside of me for the winter season. I will be able to help them transition into the role and help them get to know the ins and outs of running SFC Canada.

Position: National Director for Snowboarders and Skiers for Christ Canada.

SFC is seeking to fill its national director role with a dynamic and organized leader who is passionate about leading and facilitating snowriders to Christ. The position is based in Fernie BC, Canada.

The successful applicant will lead SFC Canada in fulfilling our mission of ‘existing to be a bridge that connects the snowriding culture to Jesus Christ, by partnering with the local Church.’ The applicant will be in charge of managing SFC national duties and being a liaison with other SFC chapter leaders and members. The National Director is required to lead SFC according to the core values of the organization and within the statement of faith on our website. www.sfc-canada.com

The successful applicant will be of Godly Christian character, a visionary leader, a person who has initiative and who also has a strong leadership skill set. Preference will be given to a person who has had at least 2 years of Bible College training, experience in a snow riding ministry and is living the core rider lifestyle. The successful applicant must have strong administration skills, proficient use of Microsoft Office, social media, websites, e-newsletters and filming/editing video.

Position will start on a part-time probationary basis on Dec 1/2011. The applicant will have to live in Fernie, BC and will work alongside the current SFC National Director for four months. The applicant will need to have a current drivers license, be willing to travel and will need to complete a Criminal Record Check.

If the applicant successfully finishes the probationary period of four months they will then start the full-time position on April 1/2012.

Salary to be determined.

Application deadline: October 1/2011

Email resumes to: bruce@sfc-canada.com

A rad report from Seth McAllister: Northstar & SFC Japan

Every year there is a national holiday called Golden Week in Japan and it’s always the first week of May. This year we did a week long event called Golden Week Spring Park where we opened a snow park for the week with jumps, boxes and all your normal snow park items. It was the 3rd year of running the park/event and this year we had a great turnout with over 600 tickets sold. People were barbecuing with friends and riding in the park and just having a great time.

We have been running these kind of events for free the last few years and have proved to the ski company that snowboard park events are worth doing. Now we are praying that through these kind of events and working with SFC we can use snowboarding to bring the gospel to the mountain. Next year SFC wants to do several events at the park and have a testimony time form a pro rider.

Please pray that as we do these kind of community events that we can build into them a way to share about Jesus.

My life in a nutshell the last 3 months has been a learning and expanding period of my life.

I left Canada to slightly escape my life and to pour all the overflowing love I have into little Mexican children… or so I thought.

But really it has been and eye opening Emma Renovation! You see growing up in a society such as north American society,we are programed from a very young age that perfection is demanded of us and if you are not what our culture deems perfect you are not attractive.

In a women’s everyday life there is 50 to 70 negative messages projected into our brains about body image and looks a day, from Barbie to commercials, magazines, models and things people say.

This has been my constant battle, my arch nemesis in life, I have compared, dieted and compared and cried exercised and starved and cried and then ate ice cream sat in sweats then exercised then compared and gave up and bought stretchy lulu lemons…because lets face it who doesn’t look good in those. Ive dyed my hair more times than i could count, peirced my face more than once, and wore too much eyeliner for way to long. I’ve wished to be a different person my whole life, wanting to look like everyone but me….It has been 20 years and I’m still not Jessica Alba or a Victoria Secret model…SOO Its come to my attention that I need to put thoes un achievable thoughts to rest, once and for all.

My mexico game plan was been to be healthy and happy in my own skin. I took up spin class( which is deathly hard and you sweat like pig in a sauna)… running on the beach and attempting to surf which is really just me flailing in the water and biking on the ocean pier lots!

I threw away my eyeliner and have not died my hair in a year. So to say the least im attempting at being comfortable as me… and not trying to magically starve myself into Jennifer aniston, it has been at times discouraging because being this active I thought I would shrink a couple sizes but this has not been the case. In this tho I have realized that im made to be curvaceous and even when im healthy and active I will never be what the world says i should be. So I think what im trying to say is its taken me along time to realize that I’m not perfect by Hollywood’s standards, and ive wasted over half my life thinking about my weight and what I look like and if other people approve of me.

But I say no more! I’m sad that ive wasted so much time caring because beauty comes from somewhere deep inside people its not in there clothes or hair or what size they are it comes from being the best person we can be.

Watching the little girls in the slums here in Mexico has really made me understand all this, they run around with no shoes, tattered and dirty clothes and hair matted and laden with lice yet they are beautiful incredibly perfectly beautiful. They smile and laugh and all they want to do is hug and give love. I want that. I want to believe its easy, but its changing the way we think the way we see other women the way we see celebrities. I guess I just wanted to voice out loud that I’m done caring and that we all should be, because life is too short, we are all beautiful in out own ways and there is so much bigger and more important things to think about, than if im going to fit into a size 28…. and if this plan fails…guess ill just have to marry a man with chocolate skin because he wont care if i have more junk in my trunk than a Honda.

So my friends be encouraged. because you are beautiful.

Last night we held our final Dinner on the House for the season. We had another big crowd come out, approx 37 people came for the home cooked meal. The meal was provided by “Young Families” small group from Mountainside Community Church. After everyone had their fill of spaghetti, salad and apple/peach crumble we had an epic Ping Pong Tournament. The 20 contestants battled hard for top spot and the coveted Golden Paddle. Hank from Sweden was the eventual champion!

A big thanks to everyone who made food, served, did hundreds of dishes and blessed everyone who came to a Dinner on the House. Special thanks to Nathan Birch for coordinating these dinners and pulling everything together.

Five questions with Daniel “Floyd” Ralph…CE-OH!, t.m., rider, janitor, info guy, your friend.

1. Can you give us a brief history on how Me.Glad started?

Well honestly it was a joke around session where some friends and myself were talking kinda like cavemen and joking around and I said “ME…..GLAD” then I thought yeah…”ME.GLAD” so after that when riding on the hill people would ask “how’s it Floyd” I would answer “Me.Glad” then I remember people calling me ME.GLAD, I also remember hearing other people answer with it. That’s when this whole ME.GLAD became something.

2. What is the core of the Me.Glad brand? What makes Me.Glad unique?

It’s our line “expressions in made goods of cloth, to celebrate the happiest of human moods.”. We want to spread something unique in our clothing with our designs and ideas and making sure it has a “positive, fun, creative” vibe across. We also desire to work along organizations that work with orphans & sex trafficking so we can be apart if real and positive change. We are now in the process of trying to grow the brand successfully so that we can do that in a big way!

3. What has been the most challenging thing about starting this company?

I didn’t go to school…so…haha, but really I think the commitment and staying strong through the trials of what it takes to make it a business. There is some sacrifice in areas and also a lot of faith and perseverance. Listen to people that have wisdom or have been there with life and business, that’s helps a lot too.

4. You spent some time in Canada…what were you doing when you were living in the Great White North?

Haha man do i miss that time… but enjoyed those days, stoked I had them. I was helping Troy Virostek start up the YWAM boarders school and then that first year I met these 2 bros and we got crazy in Vancouver island in this little special bus. That was you Bruce & your bro Duane. Then next thing I know it was love at first site and came out to be apart of SFC in Fernie in the early ol’ days. Man good times! Wren, Shauntelle, Jake & Yvonne, G-money…it is a huge part of my life!

5. Any prayer requests for yourself or Me.Glad?

Wisdom, favor, protection & strength…For my family, and the business. I want to be Christ like living to family and friends in this new season and venture in life.

New website is up….check it out. www.meglad.com

As most of you know, we are having an SFC International Conference in just over a months time. As we look towards the conference, Josh Stock and myself want to put out a challenge for you to join us in prayer daily. It doesn’t matter if you are able to come to the conference or not, we hope that you will join with us and pray for SFC over the next month. Josh had a great idea to pray for the “540 Window”, I’ll let him explain it in his own words….

So, the other day I was praying about missions stuff. Let me backtrack…(second sentence and I’m already “backtracking”). Sorry. When I was in Bible school, I used to be in charge of “praying missionally” (this is just a churched-up way of praying for a specific country, their culture, the missionaries to that area, that Jesus would be made known to them, etc.) at each meeting. We also prayed often for this thing called the “10-40 Window.” It is made up of the countries between the 10th and 40th degrees of latitude. The missions world at the time was passionate about praying for the 10-40 window and the largely non-Christian population that it was made up of. So we did it. Often on a daily basis.

Now, when I was praying the other morning, I thought, “God, I want to pray missionally and intentionally and regularly for what I’d like to call the ’540 Window’…haha.” That’s what I’m calling my missional approach to the shred world. Of course, “540″ in reference to the trick, and also 5:40, as in each day at 5:40, I want to take 5 minutes to pray for the ski and snowboard world. I want to pray for the “windows” of opportunity that we have in peoples’ lives; on the hill, in town, as 6-month seasonal employees, as friends, as interns. So, today I set my phone to remind me daily at 5:40 to lift up the shred world. To pray missionally for the 540 WINDOW, that God would soften their hearts, continue to raise up disciples who make disciples and that we would live our lives with the sense of urgency that Jesus often spoke with in the Bible. That we would take full advantage of every situation, of every action, of every word, every coffee, every smile, and every dinner we get to share with people.

I am going to keep my alarm set every day for the next month leading up to the SFC International Conference, each day lifting up the shred world, a.k.a. the 540 Window, in prayer. I’m quite fond of these silly little ideas God gives me. If you’d like to join me, great! If this notion rings true with you as well, perfect. Share it. If you think I’m stupid, no stress.

Eph. 1:15-17 15 For this reason I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which exists among you and your love for all the saints, 16 do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention of you in my prayers; 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him.

1 Thes. 1:2-4   2 We give thanks to God always for all of you, making mention of you in our prayers; 3 constantly bearing in mind your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of our God and Father, 4 knowing, brethren beloved by God, His choice of you;

2 Thes. 1:11-12 11 To this end also we pray for you always, that our God will count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power, 12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I just got back from the Movement in Kamloops and it was a great weekend! It started off with a crazy night on Friday, the roads were horrible and many groups were delayed in arriving. Rogers Pass was closed for most of the day (soon after I had driven through) and some people got delayed in Golden until the next morning. And then, the SFC guys from Whistler had their van broken into and a lot of their stuff got jacked! It was a rough start, but things only got better. Joel Parker did a great job speaking and sharing God’s heart with the kids, God was doing some powerful things. My favourite time of the weekend was the service projects I got to do at the Thift Store and then at the Kamloops Food Bank. I couldn’t believe how busy the Food Bank was and the amount of food they go through in a month. It was incredible to see.

Props to Shawn Wagner for all his work and pulling this event off again.
